Alkaline skin care: a healthy life needs alkalis

From a biochemical point of view all humans are alkaline. For example, babies grow in the womb with a pH of 8 to 8.5. This is an even higher alkaline value than the pH of the blood, because this has a pH of 7.35 to pH 7.45. A neutral pH is 7. Anything below corresponds to an acidic environment.

Being the source of all life, the sea also has a pH of 8 to 8.5. The same applies to drinking water, because this usually has a pH of 7 to 7.5.

Why alkaline skin care?

An imbalance in the acid-base balance has an adverse impact on human health. To avoid it, our body is permanantly striving to keep its pH at a constant level. It draws on all possible alkaline reserves - bones for example - to achieve this constant pH. In addition, it tries to excrete excess acids and / or store them in the connective tissue. Cellulitis and a premature formatoin of wrinkles can be the effects of a chronic hyperacidity on the outer appearance. Alkaline skin care helps to counteract excess acidity.

What causes hyperacidity?

Hyperacidity of the organism may have diverse causes:

  • An unbalanced diet, e. g. due to too much black tea and coffee
  • High consumption of animal proteins by too much meat (uric acid)
  • Over-acidification by cigarettes (sulphuric acid, sulphur dioxide)
  • Excessive consumption of acid-producing foods such as fruit juices, soft drinks (phosphoric acid), alcohol and sugar (acetic acid)
  • Stress and / or emotional distress cause an increase of acid formation (hydrochloric acid)
  • Excessive physical exertion (lactic acid)

The body permanently tries to keep its own pH constant. This is done mainly via the kidneys and lungs but also through the skin because we sweat through the pores. If the body contains too many acids, the skin can often no longer work properly as the largest organ of elimination.

Alkaline skin care was the standard for many years

Alkaline cleansing was quite natural even in ancient times. The Egyptians, for example, bathed in the Lake Natrun, a soda lake. But you don’t have to look so far into the past: until the 50s, it was perfectly common to use alkaline skin care. Between 1920 and 1950, cleansing was consistently alkaline in nature. Soft soaps with a high pH value were considered as proven and especially gentle skin care. Only since 1950 have acidic care products also increasingly come onto the market due to changes in production processes. Today both care approaches exist in parallel alongside one another and are used according to individual preferences and skin care situations.

Alkaline skin care and nutrition

Skin care is one part of the picture. An adjustment of lifestyle and eating habits should be made at the same time in order to further relieve the organism, because it constantly tries to recreate the acid-base balance. Alkaline skin care is a valuable addition here – its possibilities are cosmetically impressive and helpful at the same time. With consistent use of alkaline skin care, a soothed, refined, clear appearance can be achieved even with problem skin. The skin feels silky soft and smooth.

    A healthy life needs alkalis

If there is an unbalance of acids and alkalis in our organism, we call that „hyperacidity“. A chronic „hyperacidity“ can have effects on our body health, such as skin irritations, rashes, and itchiness – all of those reducing the quality of life.

Cellulitis and a premature formatoin of wrinkles can be the effects of a chronic hyperacidity on the outer appearance.
